Here are the snapshots from the past week capturing the ins and outs of what we got up to on the food front.
Who knew kids could be so crazy for kumquats, but they are. I’m guessing the cuteness blinds them to the bitterness.
Took my new Staub pot — a gift from a friend — on its maiden voyage with braised farro, mushrooms, and winter greens. Both pot and farro worked like a dream: Onions, carrots, celery, farro, chicken broth, mushrooms, chopped dark leafy greens, lemon juice and zest, salt, and pepper; Parmesan to finish.
I figured this thought-provoking piece about chocolate milk in school lunch by Sally Kuzemchak of Real Mom Nutrition was well worth sharing. Plus, it gave me an excuse to make myself a glass for this photo. Darn, that stuff is delicious.
The first sign of spring showed up in my CSA box: three artichokes. Cut them in half, scoop out the hairy bits, steam until tender, brush with olive oil, finish on the grill. Salt and lemon just before serving.
Made roll ups using whole wheat lavash this week instead of standard sandwiches for school lunches. Love the mosaic effect before those babies get rolled up.
This charming bundle came home from the Farmer’s Market via Mr. Mom’s Kitchen: “Naturally Sun-Dried Grapes. Unprocessed.”
Otherwise known as raisins.
Took myself out for a solo weekday working lunch at the darn charming Salumeria. A chicory and pear salad in the pretty, light-filled room and everyone was really nice there.
St. Patty’s Day is around the corner. Can’t think of a better time to treat the household to a slab of good Irish butter. Soda bread here I come.
