MY WEEK IN FOOD
AND A FEW UPDATES

Before I get into the nitty gritty of My Week in Food I wanted to let you in on a few things.

1. I’m taking the rest of the month OFF to hunker down with my tribe and enjoy their time home from school. I’ll return in 2014. In the meantime, I’ll be posting snapshots both in and out of the kitchen over on Instagram. Find me there.

2. As of this week, Best Lunch Box Ever is available as an e-book. You can grab that for your Kindle here or your Nook here.

3. Lastly, I wish you all some R & R in the coming weeks. For those of you celebrating Christmas, hope it’s warm and wonderful.

Now, here’s a peek at the week!

sweet 16 fruit salad / momskitchenhandbook.comThis was the big news: we now have a 16-year-old under our roof. Her request for birthday breakfast? “All of the out-of-season fruits you never let us buy in winter.”

Done.

Sweet potato muffin

Not so magical with flour and leavening was me. Case in point: these sweet potato muffins which didn’t rise. I choose to blame the baking powder.

New favorite winter snack: Persimmon fruit leather from Weelicious. Try!

Scored some goodies on the food gift front. Love this DIY gingerbread cookie kit.

preserved quince

And delicious poached quince from my friend Pam.

Asian Chicken with Quince and Bok Choy / momskitchenhandbook.comWasn’t sure what to do with that beautiful jar of quince, but found they were just right in this simple supper: chicken thighs cooked in a pan with garlic, soy, sriracha, bok choy and Pam’s poached quince. Total lip smacker.

Also just right was a birthday lunch for a friend at the legendary Zuni Cafe. It felt especially bittersweet to be there in light of the recent passing of Judy Rodgers, the restaurant’s longtime, and much beloved chef.

San-Francisco-Best-Cities-to-Have-a-Baby-article

Speaking of much beloved, apparently my city is beloved by parents of babies. San Francisco was named Best City to have a baby by the folks at What to Expect.  Check out why, and what other cities made the cut by looking here.

The hustle and bustle of holiday festivities seemed like a good time to give the new Amazon grocery delivery service a go. It was sort of dreamy to wake up to groceries on my doorstep. Gotta work on the ordering though. I apparently put one case of pinto beans into my cart, not one box. Tacos anyone?

Made the kids these turkey cheddar patty melts on a night Mr. Mom’s Kitchen and I were headed to a holiday party. I kind of wished we were staying in, they looked so good.

Which meant there was a little room for this crazy business: Crispy Peppermint Bark from Shutterbean. Move over Williams-Sonoma.

Glad you enjoyed the quince! I never would have thought of that use, but now will try it with my last jar.

I used a little of the poaching liquid as well. I also think I added a splash of rice wine vinegar.
