My Week in Food

Cauliflower Crust PizzaFinally jumped on the trendy “cauliflower crust pizza” bandwagon this week. Yes, you can make crust out of cauliflower (using the term “crust” loosely here). It’s not like what you’ll find at a pizza parlor, but is delicious in its own right and worth making again. This Cooking Light recipe was the basis for my pie, topped with tomato sauce, Cheddar, Parmesan, and arugula.

Raspberry Sorbetto Shake

Cold season seemed to come early in our house. When ginger tea and chicken soup weren’t enough to lift spirits, I sprung for a quart of Talenti Raspberry Sorbetto and whirled up a stellar shake. Sorbetto + frozen raspberries + vanilla extract + milk. Everyone is back on the mend; I’m sure it was the shake. 

Yogurt Parfait with Honey

Pomegranates are in season again, scattered here over yogurt with grapes, kiwi, and a dollop of honey on its way. (Almost) too pretty to eat.

Bragging rights: That’s my big brother getting serious with butchery. He was informed this week that he again earned Michelin stars for not one, but two of his restaurants. #proudsister

Pumpkin Muffins

We’ve had a couple of cooking “fails” of late. Rosie’s lovely pumpkin chocolate chip muffins were tender and picture perfect, but with one distinct problem: She accidentally used garlic-infused olive oil instead of regular. They didn’t get eaten, but they did scare away the vampires.

Stuffed Peppers

I picked up some gorgeous chiles at the farmers’ market, filled them with shrimp and other goodies, and made a smoky tomato sauce to go with. I was pleased as punch until the first bite. Yikes. The chiles were too spicy for all but Mr. Mom’s Kitchen, who didn’t mind having it all to himself.


Made up for that little mishap with a a quick minestrone that was a huge hit. I put a rough “how to” over on Instagram if you care to have a peek. 
One Pan Lunch

Speaking of quick, I’m still hooked on this one-pan meal that continues to be a breakfast and lunch standard at least once a week.

Quick and Easy Stir FryAnother working lunch staple that I pulled from the archives this week: I stir fry up whatever veggies I have on hand, add about 1/4 of a package of Hodu Soy Spicy Yuba Noodles, top with roasted peanuts, a dribble of soy sauce. Seriously good and so easy.
How to Store Basil

This basil bundle brightened up my kitchen window all week long and I was wowed by how well it lasted in just a jar of water.

Chocolate Coconut Energy Balls

Here’s what it looks like when you turn Chocolate Coconut Copycat Bars into energy balls. Make the dough, roll them into balls instead of pressing in a pan, roll balls in coconut, and store in a jar in the fridge where the kids can get at them instead of the Halloween candy I always buy too early.

Snapped this photo while waiting at the dentist office. It’s Cook’s Illustrated’s line-up for best affordable olive oils. California Olive Ranch tops the list (available in Costco, among other places).

Beautiful Chiles

Look what else I picked up at the dentist. In addition to being good with the pearly whites, my dentist is a gentlewoman farmer. I’ve learned if I book my appointments early in the week, there’s a good chance I’ll be sent home with a new toothbrush AND leftovers from her weekend gardening. Score.


I met Angela Camacho, a local mom and entrepreneur, at an event this week and am intrigued by her business, Wines Unleashed. She chooses affordable bottles from small wineries all over the world and sends them right to your door. It’s like getting a little gift box of deliciousness every month. I’m in.


I don’t know what the dining room table is used for in your house, but apparently in mine it’s a good place for: dirty socks, stinky shoes, half eaten food still in the wrapper, utensils left over from lunch, and forms that probably should have been signed last week. And this is just from one child.

I’ve been resnapping old photos on the blog lately, which has been taking me down a memory lane of recipes, like this baked Chicken Parmesan. Crispy and tasty and not nearly as decadent as most.

Also crispy and tasty (and plenty decadent) was the Fletcher’s corndog I had at the Texas State Fair while on a trip to root on Mr. Mom’s Kitchen’s football team. Proof that it’s not all kale and quinoa over here, people.

Cheddar cheese on pizza. That’s blasphemous. Other than that all looks good at Mr. Mom’s house.

Sorry Mr. Mom’s Kitchen’s team lost, but glad you had a Corny Dog. I assume you skipped whatever weird fried food was featured this year at the fair. On a healthier note, the Chicken Parmesan looks delicious.
