A fruit skewer festooned with every and anything green I could pick up in the produce aisle is probably not what my Irish ancestors had in mind for  St. Patrick’s Day. But I expect they didn’t imagine most of the concoctions modern day revelers have invented to honor the patron saint of Ireland, from four leaf clover cookies to Shamrock Shakes. And I’d argue these are a whole lot healthier and just as festive as anything that gets its green from a tube of artificial food coloring.

So, go have a peek at the market and pick up your greens: pears, Granny Smith apples, green grapes, honeydew melon. What have I missed?

Cut everything into bite-size pieces and thread them onto skewers. If serving these to little kids, snap off the pointy tips just to be on the safe side.

For a playful twist, serve the skewers by spearing them into a half melon, like this:
