10 Healthier Holiday Sweets

The holidays are upon us …and while I may have pushed shopping to the back burner, I haven’t dared to neglect my holiday diet.  By diet, I mean sampling of seasonal sweets.

I believe in a little indulgence this time of year, ideally in its purest form: Homemade. The beautifully wrapped candies and the ready-made treats at the stores may catch my eye, but nothing is quite like a treat made from scratch.

Here is a line up of 10 healthier holiday sweets that are a little lighter in sugar and calories, with more good-for-you ingredients than the typical dessert.

Easy Persimmon Pudding Cake

A tender, wholesome cake made with whole-grain flour and about 1/3 less sugar than similar cakes. Leftovers are terrific for breakfast with a spoonful of Greek yogurt.

Dark Chocolate Almond Bark

There are just three ingredients in this antioxidant-rich dark chocolate treat. The bark is perfect for stowing in a jar or container and gifting to teachers and friends.

Cran-Raspberry Pecan Tart with Whole-Grain Crust

A beauty of a tart with a whole-grain crust, maple syrup instead of corn syrup, and loads of antioxidant-packed raspberries and cranberries.

Salted Butterscotch Mousse Cups

This is a dessert that looks and tastes far more decadent than it really is. Each serving clocks in at just 250 calories a serving.

Wild Blueberry Thumbprint Cookies

A classic cookie filled with nutrient-rich wild blueberries and chia seeds. The cookie is made with whole-wheat flour and seasoned with all your favorite holidays spices.

Mini Raspberry Bundt Cakes

Raspberry Buttermilk Coffee Cake

Make this as one big cake or individual ones. Either way, it’s perfect for holiday brunch or to pack up for gift giving.

Rustic Italian Apple Cake

A pretty cake with a spiral of tart apples that’s made with whole-grain flour and only about a tablespoon of sugar per serving.

Moroccan Spiced Walnuts

A sweet-savory gift that is great to set out at holiday parties or pack into jars for gifting to friends.

Light Vanilla Eggnog Floats

These little floats let you have your eggnog and eat it too, since they are light and luscious without breaking the calorie bank.

Double Ginger Molasses Rye Cookies

A chewy, flavor-packed cookie with two kinds of whole-grain flour and two kinds of ginger. All that’s required is a glass of milk to wash it down.
