Everything You Need to Know About Teaching Kids To Cook

If you ask me, cooking is an essential life skill, right along with doing laundry and managing your finances. Even before I became a parent, I knew that raising my kids to be capable cooks would be a priority. Once they came along, they spent an inordinate amount of time in the kitchen with me. I was there often, either developing recipes for work or cooking for our family. When they were tiny, I’d sit them in a high chair and hand them bits of whatever ingredient I was using to make dinner. In grade school, they began to pack their own lunches (and in the process learned what it means to build a balanced meal). By middle school, they could capably follow a recipe, and come high school, they had the skills to make suitably healthy food for any meal of the day.

The whole effort of empowering my kids in the kitchen was a slow and steady process. I didn’t sit them all down and “school” them in any formal way. They picked it up in fits and starts over time. What I learned along the way about kids and cooking naturally spilled over into my work. I’ve spoken about it in talks and podcast interviews, taught cooking classes for young people, written magazine stories and an entire cookbook on the subject, and published close to a dozen blog posts on engaging kids in kitchen.
